ATO OFFERS RELIEF FOR AGENTS AFFECTED BY ITS IT OUTAGES

Wednesday, 01 March 2017

The Australian Tax Office’s (ATO) has invited BAS and other agents and their clients adversely impacted by its IT outages to seek deferrals or seek complex issues resolution for more complicated matters.

In its BAS Agents newsletter issued Thursday 9 February the ATO said, “If you need help meeting your lodgment program after the unplanned systems outages in December and February, additional services and support are available.

“We know the outages created lodgment backlogs for some of you, so we deferred the 21 December 2016 and 15 January 2017 due dates to help. If you lodged within these deferred periods your clients will not be penalised and your 85% on-time lodgment requirement will not be affected.

It said “If you require additional deferrals, you can:
• submit an ATO assessed deferral application
• phone 13 72 86 Fast Key Code 5

“We will review your deferral requests in light of the impacts of the outages.

“While the availability of deferrals should assist you in managing your lodgment program, we understand that as a consequence of the outages some of you may not be able to meet the 85% on-time lodgment requirement. Where this is the case we will not apply sanctions this year.”

It said “We will keep you updated about the independent review into the systems outages in the Tax professionals newsletter and Tax professionals newsroom.”

Earlier the ATO recommended Agents experiencing problems because of theoutage could also submit a complex issue resolution form,
